Pilot an optional, paid jail crew that builds homes with a licensed builder and a nonprofit

Garland County, Arkansas’s jail runs a farm program, and Garland County Habitat for Humanity has built more than 170 homes since 1995. A federally funded review of studies found that vocational training in prison raised employment after release more than other education did. We ask Bastrop County to pilot an optional, paid crew that builds homes alongside a licensed builder and a housing nonprofit.

When it reaches the goal it’s handed to the officials named above at a public meeting, and their answer is posted online. This is a petition to your elected officials — like the clipboard at the courthouse door. It does not put anything on the ballot; that takes the state’s official petition process.
